Build your own prompt set
If you answer customers, write emails or summarise meetings every week, you need not rewrite the prompt each time. Save good prompts as templates, for example in a notes app. Next time, just fill in the new details. This lesson wraps up stage 2.
A prompt worth saving has 4 things:
- An easy name: "Reply to a price question".
- The fixed task and context: the part that does not change.
- Fields to fill in: the part that changes, in square brackets such as [Product name].
- Format: length, tone, form.
Where to keep it? Somewhere you can open quickly, such as phone notes or a personal document. You can also click Save in this site's Prompt library.
Do not save in a prompt: passwords, card numbers, customer data.
Step by step
- Pick 3 recurring tasks
Write down 3 writing-related tasks you do repeatedly each week. For example: replying to customers, weekly reports, posting.
- Ask AI to write a template
Open chatgpt.com. Copy the sample prompt, fill in a task of yours and send.
- Try it on a real task
Start a new conversation. Paste the template, fill in real work details and send. Do not enter private data.
- Save them in one place
Open the notes app you use and create a note called "My prompts". Paste each template with an easy name. Repeat for the other 2 tasks.
What did you learn?
- Recurring tasks deserve their own template.
- Put the parts that change in square brackets.
- If results are weak, fix the template, not just the result.
- Save it somewhere quick to open, with no passwords or customer data.
